A Spotlight on Credit Unions Serving Native American Communities

November is Native American Heritage Month, and Inclusiv invites you to celebrate with us by participating in an exciting webinar. We'll be joined by Monica Belz, President/CEO of Kauai Government Employees FCU, Shayna Ferguson, Manager/Loan Officer of Lakota FCU, Helen Mickel, President/CEO of Tongass FCU, and Stephanie Sievers, CEO of Sisseton-Wahpeton FCU, who will share how their credit unions deliver targeted financial services to Native Americans in the continental US as well as in Alaska and Hawaii. This webinar will provide Inclusiv members with an opportunity to share, ask questions, and learn how to be better advocates for financial equity and inclusion.

Monica Belz, President and CEO of Kauai Government Employees Federal Credit Union, shapes a dynamic island vision for economic growth grounded in regenerative and social entrepreneurship. She led the credit union and community through multiple natural disasters and was recognized for several major awards in the state of Hawaii including; CEO of the Year, Business of Pride, and Women Who Mean Business. Led by a passion for social economics and her expertise in strategy, she achieved her Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) designation through the National Credit Union Foundation, joined the Young Professionals Program (WYCUP) with the World Council of Credit Unions and participated in Cooperative Trust’s CRASHER program. Prior to joining KGEFCU as CEO, she was Vice President of Strategic Development at Gather Federal Credit Union in Hawaii. Her 20 years of experience in community development complements a diverse portfolio of work that includes disaster relief, wilderness survival and first aid, numerous humanitarian projects and stints as an EMT Firefighter and PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
Shayna Ferguson is the Manager/Loan Officer of Lakota Federal Credit Union located in Kyle, SD which is in the heart of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Mrs. Ferguson has been an employee of the Credit Union since October 18th, 2012. Lakota Federal Credit Union was chartered in August of 2012, opening the doors to the public three months later in November. LFCU is the only federally insured financial institution on the 2.2-million-acre Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration. Mrs. Ferguson holds many roles for LFCU from day to day overseeing the credit union to accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, grant reporting, Backoffice balancing, loan requests and now most recently mortgage lending. Mrs. Ferguson was born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation here in South Dakota and is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
Helen Mickel is the President/CEO of Tongass Federal Credit Union in Ketchikan, Alaska. Helen is an advocate for small community development initiatives. Helen believes financial education opportunities, and local, affordable, and meaningful financial services for individuals and small businesses can result in building strong communities. Helen holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Alaska. She is an honors graduate of Western CUNA Management School, and she is a CUES certified Credit Union Executive. In her free time, Helen enjoys community events, outdoor walks and spending time with family.
Stephanie Sievers has a passion for helping credit unions succeed, and with 3 Master’s degrees and over a decade of credit union CEO experience, she led multiple turnaround successes; as well as mentored others to do the same. Her innovative problem solving, strategic marketing and savvy business skills, have aided her in garnering numerous awards, including: Small Business of the Year, Best Places to Work and over twenty national marketing awards. Currently she is the CEO of the $6M Sisseton-Wahpeton FCU in Agency Village, SD and the $730M AltaOne FCU in Ridgecrest, CA.
